so my car had a flat tire, in the garage fortunately. I took the flat tire off and put the compact spare on, i won't be driving it with it at all, it is just on the car rather than keeping it on the jack for 24-48 hrs. btw, nicest scissor jack I have ever used, all aluminum, ultra light weight...crazy.

Flat Tire - Project Flickr: Look into my Eyes

Flat Tire - Project Flickr: Look into my Eyes

Maybe stretching the theme a bit, but hear me out:

It was 97 degrees in Peoria, AZ this afternoon and I walked out of the Home Depot store to be greeted with this lovely flat tire. I dragged my jack and tire iron out fir the first time ever and proceeded to get on the ground and get dirty.

I'm not that old, 63, but I am overweight. I thought I'd be able to do a tire change. It proved tougher than I thought. I'm not as agile as I was at one time!

In the meantime, not one person acknowledged me or my predicament. No eye contact at all... even when I said Hi or nodded my head at them.

I finally called my insurance and found out that I have roadside assistance insurance. It was a 45 minute wait, but much easier on my body!

What really surprised me is that even when someone parked next to me, it was like I was invisible. When I'd offer a greeting, not one person would look me in the eyes. I think they interpreted my friendliness as, "Will you get on the ground and change my tire?"

I learned something from this. Eye contact and a word of encouragement would have been welcome this afternoon. I'm going to be more sensitive to that now.

Route 66: Along the Highway (12/03/07). Springfield (IL) - Lebanon (MO)

Route 66: Along the Highway (12/03/07). Springfield (IL) - Lebanon (MO)

--------------------------------

The breakfast that day consisted of plates of bacon and fried eggs, toast and honey, butter and an occasional beer and weak coffee. Then stroll through Springfield in search of a souvenir shop, where we get a sunglasses and a pair of pennants $ 1.5 each. On leaving that city, we headed toward Lebanon, in the adjoining state of Missouri.

That as was customary from the beginning, we got lost at some stage unknown but ... What sense does the trip without contingencyies? I was glad to lose. We were going into Middle America. Roads cracked by weather, tires burst on the shoulders and cheap old cars rusting sheet metal by the passage of time in a deserted barn.

We arrived at Scotty's Route 66 Bar and Grill (www.scottysroute66.com) in Hamel (IL) to cool off and sign in your guestbook (found at the Spanish who had been there). We crossed the Mississippi and then we got to Route 66 State Park to stretch our legs and continue our journey, but not before being stopped and frisked by complacently some nice policemen County by traffickers took us wanting to cross the Mexican border.

Finally we reached Best Western Wyotta Inn in Lebanon, where we could laugh about what happened that day. We played rest and prepare for the next day. Objective: Claremore (Oklahoma).

Travel advisory: Visit the famous Arch in St. Louis and Meramec Caverns (both in Missouri), and never may keep anything illegal in the suitcases (thank goodness they did not bring the police sniffer dog).

Recommended song for this installment: "I'm so tired" by Canned Heat.

143/365 days - I've had better days

143/365 days - I've had better days

Maybe it started with the socks. I slept pretty badly in the hotel room and woke at 10 o'clock. Roommates grumbling about the noise. Showered, put clean socks on I bought the day before - too small. Back on with yesterday's socks. Ok - leave for the airport - forgot my coat. Back for my coat. The ticket machine at the train station doesn't accept notes. Line up. Get ticket. Some confusion at the station as some guy tells someone that the train doesn't go to the airport - people get off then back on. I get to the airport - I have my times mixed up - its 11am and my plane leaves at 1250 - all I have is carry on luggage. So I have some breakfast read the paper jump on the net. The announcement comes that the plane is leaving from a different gate - no problems - but then its 20 mins late. So I nap on the plane (except the guy behind me is really tall so I can't lay the seat back). Land - go get the car - I'm charged for 2 days parking - oh well. Driving out - I'm stopped by a radar patrol doing 62 in a 50 zone. I thought it was a 60 zone - $179 fine pay in a month. The cop says "I hope the rest of your day gets better" Thanks.
